In light of questions we’ve received on the topic, I wrote a brief explanatory article and included a demo.
GitLab Orbit is GitLab’s context graph for the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC):
It can index your GitLab instance (along with all its repositories and metadata);
It connects code, merge requests, CI/CD pipelines, work items, and more;
And it represents everything as a graph that you can query.

How Can Orbit Help in Practice?
Time savings: Fewer manual searches and less context switching between screens.
Instead of piecing together an answer from dozens of API calls or manually inspecting repositories, Orbit provides a single overview of dependencies, ownership, and blast radius—enabling teams and AI agents to quickly understand the impact of every change.
What Questions Can Orbit Answer? For Example:
- What will break if I change a specific service?
- Which merge requests touched a specific file in the last 90 days?
- Who performed the most code reviews in this group?
- Where are open critical vulnerabilities located, and which pipelines introduced them?
- Which projects depend on a specific library?
Orbit is designed to answer infrastructure and SDLC questions that standard GitLab doesn’t answer directly,
especially when you need to understand relationships between code spread across multiple repositories, CI/CD processes, and team ownership.
