About a year ago, Atlassian acquired the “Automation for Jira” add-on (link below). This add-on was very popular and allowed Jira users to create automations and define a variety of rules without needing any programming knowledge (a “Low Code” solution).
It allowed users to configure various rules using a convenient GUI, without writing code.
Recently, Atlassian removed it from their available add-ons for Jira Cloud in their marketplace and moved it exclusively to the Jira Cloud Premium edition.
This means that if you want automation, you will have to upgrade to the more expensive Premium version.
Consequently, the expense will be double and applied to all users (since billing is based on the total number of Jira users, even if only some of them use the automation).
Therefore, if you have many users, this is a significant price increase.
For example: For 50 users, you would now have to pay $700 per month instead of $350, which comes to $8,400 per year instead of $4,200.
And for 100 users, you would have to pay $1,400 per month instead of $700, which comes to $16,800 per year instead of $8,400.
But Atlassian isn’t telling you about the alternative…
As an alternative, it is possible to write the automation that is currently missing by using other add-ons (such as ScriptRunner).
This way, the cost remains significantly lower. It is comprised of the cost of the add-on (which is significantly lower than the cost of Jira Cloud Premium) + the one-time development cost for the automations.
You can develop the automation yourself if you have the time and knowledge, or get help from us.
We specialize in this type of automation development, and we have recently done this for several of our clients, saving them tens of thousands of dollars.
We can also support the code in the future and maintain it as needed.

Notes:
- The “Automation for Jira” add-on currently exists for Jira Server only (there are 2 versions – a free “Lite” version and a paid one).
However, in light of Atlassian’s recent announcement regarding the future sunsetting of the Server version, you should take this into account (link to the announcement below). - The Premium version includes additional capabilities beyond automation – you should check the manufacturer’s website to compare the differences between this version and the Standard / Enterprise versions.
- In addition to development on top of Jira, we also sell Jira Cloud licenses and compatible add-ons such as ScriptRunner on an annual subscription model.
At ALM Toolbox, we provide consulting, Jira licenses, private cloud hosting, support for Atlassian products, Data Center setup for Jira and other tools, training, cloud migration, and integration with Git and Git-based tools such as GitLab, Azure DevOps, GitHub, Bitbucket, and more.
